The Almandal (spelled various ways) is essentially a holy table of practice, used during scrying, invocation, etc.
John Dee used a form of this method, which he learned from earlier works such as the Summa Sacre Magice, the Ars Notoria, and others.
This paper examines the Arabic form of this type of magic, and it's possible origins. I have not read the whole thing yet, but it looks interesting.
